check yo'self before you wreck yo'self

While flicking through a local magazine on the weekend I saw a full page ad with a breast cancer ribbon made of one of the advertisers products taking up most of the page.  The rest of the ad had a line about how important it is to do regular checks followed by the logos of other products owned by the advertiser but nothing about the proceeds of the ad or anything else being donated to a breast cancer charity.

It’s fantastic that what was once a taboo subject in this region is getting so much attention. Anyone who has lost a young friend to the illness knows how fast and aggressive the illness can be, but  it did strike me that companies here almost rush to do something “for breast cancer” without really thinking properly about it.  I’m not saying companies should turn into charities, CSR is still about the bottom line but the end result should be more than selling lots of  product while filling the deep pockets of a publishing house.

Which is why I love the project between BurJuman and Unicare medical centre. During the month of October 5,000 vouchers for a free examination at Unicare medical centre will be available at the information desks at BurJuman on a first come first served basis (with vouchers valid until November 30th) If you’ve already checked yourself then you can contact BurJuman to get a free voucher for a family member, a colleague or anyone else who might not be able to afford it.

As Ice Cube would say, prevention is better than cure.
